Q: Why does The Barrier Insulation .Com recommend Warmboard so highly?

A: Because the Warmboard system is the most efficient conductor of energy for the sub floor application.  When utilized in conjunction with The Barrier Insulation, the Warmboard system is optimized for all applications of the radiant heating sub floor system.  The Barrier Insulation prevents the energy from migrating downward, therefore, the full capacity of the warmboard system is optimized to perform its designed function: heating the living spaces.

A Warmboard radiant heat system is the best way to provide even, responsive, energy efficient radiant heat in a conventional framed home.

How does Warmboard do this?

Warmboard combines a high strength tongue and groove plywood structural APA rated subfloor panel with a state of the art low mass high performance radiant heat floor panel. The same labor that would normally just install a structural subfloor, simultaneously installs the panels that become part of your radiant heating system.

Virtually all standardized hydronic components that are used in all radiant heat systems work with Warmboard. Your general contractor will love the ease of installing Warmboard as much as your plumbing contractor will love the ease of installing the rest of the systems components.

More importantly, you will enjoy the superior quality of radiant heat that Warmboard provides. Warmboard radiant heat systems simply outperform other radiant heating panels:

  • High conductivity means more even floor temperatures
  • High conductivity means thick plush carpeting is no problem
  • Low mass provides fast response radiant heat that is easy to control
  • Fast response means "just right" temperatures - right when you want them
  • Our 1-1/8" thick, dry plywood base is perfect for nailing fine hardwood flooring
  • Mortar beds screwed directly to Warmboard make tile installation easy
  • The radiant heat system that saves you money throughout the installation
  • The radiant heating system that doesn't ask you to compromise

Warmboard Radiant Subfloor - Now there's a better way

The benefits of radiant heating have been known for centuries-the Romans used it to heat their homes and baths-but it's taken until now to combine the science of thermo-dynamics with modern materials and construction methods to bring radiant heat out of the Stone Age. Typically, radiant heating systems involve a heavy slab of concrete, poured over closely spaced tubing, through which hot water is pumped-not much evolved from those ancient Roman systems.

                                            Today, there's a smarter way

                                        Warmboard's innovative approach

Warmboard combines a structural subfloor and a thermodynamically sophisticated radiant floor heat panel into an elegantly simple system. Warmboard begins with a stiff, strong, 1-1/8" thick, 4' X 8' sheet of tongue and groove, weather-resistant plywood.

A modular pattern of channels is cut into the top surface. A thick sheet of aluminum is stamped to match the channel pattern and is permanently bonded to each panel. As a structural building element, Warmboard is an APA-rated subfloor panel, ICC ER-5525, that can be sawed, screwed, nailed, glued or otherwise used in conventional platform framed construction.

                                                   Efficient installation

Other radiant heat systems are more labor intensive because they're added either above or below the subfloor. Warmboard is the subfloor. With Warmboard, the same labor that is used to install just a subfloor, installs a major portion of your radiant system. And as the panels are installed, the modular channel pattern automatically produces the tubing layout that takes so much time to accomplish with other systems. A roll of half-inch PEX tubing (the radiant industry standard for toughness, reliability and performance) is then easily installed into the channel to complete the hydronic heating circuit. The lowered labor cost designed into Warmboard saves you money throughout construction.

                                             Efficient performance for life

Warmboard's efficiency begins with installation, but really pays off, year after year, because it simply outperforms all other radiant heat systems.

Aluminum conducts heat 240 times better than conventional concrete and 490 times better than gypsum-based concretes. In fact, Warmboard is so conductive that with 12" on-center tubing, it outperforms even 6" on-center slab systems. Better conductivity equals faster response times, more even floor temperatures, and more heat delivered from lower water temperatures. Lower water temperature means lower energy bills. It also means more choices in ways to heat your water. While many Warmboard systems use conventional boilers, innovative low temperature alternatives such as condensing hot water appliances, geothermal, solar panels, and ground source heat pumps work just fine. Lower water temperature also gives you more floor covering choices. Only Warmboard lets you to choose from hardwood, any type of tile, even thick wool carpets with a nice plush pad. Warmboard works beautifully with all of them.

                                                  Cost Considerations

Although radiant heating is usually selected for comfort, cleanliness, health, and environmental reasons, Warmboard has now made it even more affordable. While many variables will influence the overall cost of systems which include Warmboard, in most cases the high performance of Warmboard costs no more, and often saves money compared to installations that do not perform nearly as well...

Because of its high conductivity, Warmboard's 12" on center tubing spacing outperforms other panels even those using 6" on center tubing. The resulting difference reduces the amount of tubing and manifolds by 50% resulting in less labor and less materials costs.

Because Warmboard is so exceptionally efficient, most Warmboard installations require water temperatures well below 120 degrees. Low water temperatures make the use of low cost, dedicated, conventional water heaters possible in many cases, or even ultra high efficiency ground source heat pumps.

Radiant heating cuts average energy use as much as 30% over forced-air systems, and the low water temperatures typical of Warmboard installations cut energy bills even more.

Warmboard systems are easily zoned, further reducing energy usage by heating only the occupied rooms or regions. Fast response means you won't wait a long time to heat up that guest room when it is unexpectedly needed.

Radiant heating is ideal for cathedral and open beamed ceilings, because overheating tall ceilings does not waste energy.

We will help you select a cost effective air conditioning solution as well. Ductwork for air conditioning only is not as extensive as would be required for both heat and air conditioning; also, the registers can be placed at the ceiling because the cold will fall, requiring less energy to cool the room. New "High Velocity" air conditioning is a perfect match with a Warmboard Radiant System.

Most importantly, because Warmboard is designed to smoothly integrate with conventional construction practice, many of the hidden costs of radiant are eliminated. You will save on labor costs throughout construction.

Builders and architects are comfortable with Warmboard

Warmboard radiant heat gives architects an elegant alternative to forced air, and in the end, a more pleasing environment for the homeowner. One they'll be satisfied with-and proud of-for years to come.

Warmboard is easy to work with, almost from the moment it's specified. Unlike heavy slab systems, Warmboard doesn't create extra structural problems, which is especially important for designs that require long clear spans, or in regions of high seismic loads. And since it's an integral part of platform-framed construction, no special details are needed. Walls and staircases won't require any special framing to accommodate concrete slab thickness. And at Warmboard we do the working drawings for you. We work from your plans to provide the optimum tubing layout and zoning plan. You'll get a set of drawings that will satisfy even the most particular contractor or building official. Warmboard solves problems for builders too. Anybody who has installed subfloor can install Warmboard. Everything that attaches to it goes in conventionally.

Slab systems, on the other hand, challenge builders in many ways. They introduce moisture-as much as a gallon per square foot-and with it, mold, mildew, and warping that can be almost impossible to rectify. And they're rarely flat and level, are difficult to repair, and drive up costs in many ways that may not be directly reflected in the radiant heat bid.

Warmboard is simply smarter for everyone involved, whether you're an architect, a builder, or you have a family that wants to enjoy the most comfortable radiant heat system. Make yourself comfortable.

                                              Radiant warms you directly

Living in a radiant heat home provides you with a level of comfort that no other heating method can match. If you asked someone who lives in a radiant heated home what they like about it, they'd tell you "It just feels right". That's because, like the sun on your face, or the warm sand under your feet on a tropical beach, living with radiant heat is one of life's simple pleasures. By turning the floor of your home into a source of heat, you and your family will feel its warmth and comfort directly.

                                                        It's healthier

Rather than blowing hot air along with dust and allergens around your home, radiant floor heat provides you with nothing but warmth. Your home is a cleaner, healthier environment, and everyone in it will breath easier.

                                                     Invisible comfort

The most remarkable thing about radiant floor heat is, well nothing. With no unsightly registers, baseboard or wall radiators, there's nothing to see. Unlike forced air heating, there's no noisy fan so there's nothing to hear. If it weren't for how comfortable it keeps you and your family, you'd never even know it was there.

Whether you're building a new house, or remodeling your present home, isn't comfort one of the most important qualities you desire?  Radiant has always been the most comfortable choice for heating your home.  And today, the smartest radiant heating system you can buy is Warmboard.
